Once, on a canoe trip down the St. Croix river (boundary between northern Minnesota and Wisconsin) we stopped for lunch on the bank, and in a shallow puddle we saw dozens and dozens of tadpoles. We squatted there for a long time and watched as they grew legs and became frogs and left the puddle. What luck to be in the right place at the right time! The mosquitos eventually drove us away.

True story? Aw, c'mon, you're pulling our leg!

True! It was before cell phones, or I'd have a video. We squated by that puddle for hours, entranced.

Your observance does ring a bell with me about a species that grows that quickly before available water (as in a puddle) evaporates away. Talk about adaptation! What a wonderful experience you had!
