Suet recipe

No-Melt Suet

1/2 cup lard
1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 cup flour
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup cornmeal

Microwave the lard at low power in a glass container until soft and just starting to melt. Add peanut butter. Microwave a little longer if necessary, then stir together. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Chill in the refrigerator until firm. Then form into little balls. Store balls in a container in refrigerator. Use as needed. Birds love this stuff!

I use it to fill suet feeders made from firewood. Just take a 4-6" piece, add a screw in eye, then drill 1 - 1.5" holes into it at random places, making sure not to run into other holes. Slanting them down a little would be even better.

I also fill longleaf pine cones that I've added the screw in hooks into the bottom off and hang them upside down. And I take a spatula and run a little into the bark of trees around my feeder area. And I've put it in metal suet feeders, but these are hard for woodpeckers to get, unless you mount them on a board that extends below the feeder so the woodpeckers can brace against the board while feeding. And be sure not to continue into the warm days or you can give birds gout.
