New butterfly species!

Meet a beautiful zilpa longtail (Chioides zilpa)! I'm pretty sure it's a new record for Blanco County as well. I posted my images to Bugguide.net, then figured out the species/genus myself. There's a more common white-striped longtail (Chioides albofasciatus) that gave me a hint where to search. Always fun to meet a new species!

UPDATE: My sighting has been verified

Exciting! As temperature zones shift I believe we will continue to see the ranges for all sorts of creatures shift as well.

That long tail is dramatic. I note this one is nectaring on what looks like mist-flower. That plant sure draws them in - I was out getting shots of two different kinds of grass skippers on my mist flowers yesterday!

Fascinating. I would have never guessed this to be a butterfly. Had I happened upon it in my garden, I would have assumed it to be some kind of moth.
