Mockingbird kid

I'm happy (and relieved) to report that our baby wrens safely fledged in the back yard. So have a lot of mockingbird kiddos. Including this loud mouth that perched on our street sign. Baby mockingbirds make a high-pitched screech so parents can find them and feed them. This one was definitely screeching. When the young mockingbirds get old enough to fend for themselves, then the parents chase them away. Now you moms and dads, don't get any bird-brained ideas! :-)

Mockingbirds are so showy at all stages, aren't they!? All bluster, all the time.

We had a great time watching Mom and Pop cardinal working to feed two fledged babies yesterday, in between showers. The little ones are nearly as big as their parents already, but they are still fluttering and begging to be fed. It looked like the parents were feeding them tiny snails - an activity I can really get behind!
