Ladies' tresses

Take a look at this GORGEOUS bloom! Some friends found this plant on their property in western Blanco County. Someone told them it might be autumn ladies tresses. I checked with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and that person was mostly right!

This is a nodding ladies' tresses (Spiranthes cernua), which is in the orchid family. I also pulled out my copy of Wildflowers of the Texas Hill Country and found the species account on page 14. "These small beauties should be admired in place, as they are next to impossible to transplant," advised author Marshall Enquist.

A native orchid in our area is so amazing. It is a beauty. Are they watching for seeds?

Hope so!

How beautiful. I remember learning at the Austin orchid show, one year, that there as many as 54 Texas wild orchids. This one is a beauty and quite a find.
