Yesterday in the Meadow, I spotted this absolutely amazing insect. No camera with me so I had to run back into the house to get one. Thankfully, the mystery insect was still perched on the thistle when I returned so I got lots of shots. At first, I thought it might be a picture-window fly. Wrong! The experts at Bugguide.net this morning nailed the species AND sex: a female fruit fly (Paracantha culta). Thanks, Bugguide.net!
According to Bugguide.net, this species feeds on thistles. Bingo! That's what this one was doing, I think.
